Client: Phillippa and Steve Lambert – www.lakehousedesign.co.uk

Main Contractor: Brighstone Landscaping Ltd - www.brighstonelandscaping.co.uk

Background:

Our client, Landscape Designer, Phillippa Lambert stumbled upon a derelict two-acre site containing woodland, a lake and a Victorian walled garden on the Isle of Wight in desperate need of restoration. The site has had a varied history and started out as a Victorian marine residence, which in time was sold to several private owners. The estate later became a hotel and the gardens operated as a Tropical Bird Park. Finally, in 1999, the Old Park Hotel was sold but the Lake site and walled gardens were retained but fell into disrepair.

Phillippa and Steve Lambert bought the Lake House site and walled gardens and after extensive research, the production of a complete restoration proposal and 10 year management plan they were granted planning permission on the condition that it was completed within two years.

On completion, the site was to be used for charity fund raising events, schools and community projects. It’s because of this end result that many suppliers, contractors and manufacturers donated materials.

Design Brief:

Adbruf was asked to provide a highly durable, surfacing material that would keep loose stones to a minimum, which matched the Isle of Wight natural stone and could be used for the gravel paths within the walled garden and a sloping path that lead down to the house. A secondary project was to provide the same material, but for use within a Japanese Courtyard comprising of intricate shapes and colours.

The material had to be suitable for wheelchair access, anti-slip, enhance the natural surroundings and be environmentally friendly as the project was to be in line with ‘green’ practices and have minimal environmental impact.

Solution:

Adbruf recommended Adtex, its resin bonded two part, polyurethane hybrid resin system. In conjunction with the resin, Adbruf suggested Golden Pea Gravel that was a good match to the local stone and Green Basalt aggregates for the Japanese Courtyard. Adtex is highly durable, aesthetically pleasing and solvent-free which met with the Phillippa’s expectations.

Installation:

Adbruf’s Adtex system is easy to apply, but contractors are advised to subscribe to the product training days before installation. Alternatively, product method statements and application guides accompany the material. Brighstone Landscaping Ltd installed 123m² on the first day (Walled Garden) of Adtex resin using 1-3mm Golden Pea Gravel and a further 27m² of Adtex resin using 1-3mm Green Basalt (Japanese Garden) and 180 m² of Adtex Resin using Golden Pea Gravel (Driveways).

The material was laid on a clean, dry, contamination free base of concrete. The two part resin mix provides the binder; the components are mixed together thoroughly until homogenous, and this is applied to the substrate and spread out by squeegee. Finally, aggregates are broadcast on to the resin coated surface. The system is then left to cure.

Product Details:

Adtex resin bonded surfacing has been developed to provide an aesthetically pleasing, highly durable surface. It is particularly suitable for use in prestige developments and in conservation areas where harmony with the surrounding environment is important.

Adtex can be used for driveways, footpaths, heritage areas, landscaping and pedestrianisation schemes, roads, parks, gardens, leisure areas, cycleways and car parks.

Aggregates for use with Adtex can be selected from a wide range of natural and colour coated types. Adbruf’s aggregates range from flint, quartz, granite, recycled aggregates or glass and marble.

Client’s Comments:

“We are quite delighted with Adtex in appli¬cation, appearance, and routine care – please accept our thanks and congratulations on an excellent product!” Quote from Phillippa Lambert who also goes on to say “Thank you for all the exceptional input you and your team have given in terms of technical help.”
